PostHeaderIcon Green Tea Extract and Weight Loss

Green tea has always been known to have several health benefits, but who knew that it could contribute to losing weight as well?

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that green tea extract can increase metabolism and fat oxidation of the body. In theory, scientists believe that the weight loss benefits of green tea extracts are due to their caffeine content but the results of the study show otherwise as they discovered that green tea extracts have weight loss benefits beyond that of caffeine.

In their study, the researchers administered alone the same amount of caffeine as that in tea extracts but found that it did not make any significant changes in the body’s overall energy expenditure. This led them to conclude that tea extracts have ingredients in them that actively interact with each other, promoting increased metabolism and fat oxidation that lead to loss of weight.

Further findings indicated that a certain compound found in tea full of the extracts might be the ingredient that causes weight loss. These extract compounds called Flavonoids may alter the way the body uses norepinephrine, a hormone that monitors how calories are burned. When flavonoids interact with other extract ingredients, more calories are burned thus contributing to loss of weight.

Another ingredient that actively contributes to the weight loss benefits of green tea is the compound catechin polyphenols. These compounds also interact with other extract ingredients in order to promote lossing weight by fat burning and thermogenesis (a process of losing energy by daytime heat).

The great thing about the loss of weight benefit of extracts is that it does not have any adverse side-effects. Unlike other herbal products like ephedra and prescription drugs for obesity, green extract does not increase the speed of heart rates or raise blood pressure. In this regard, tea is an effective and safer alternative to other weight loss products which may cause harm to the user.

The study conducted by the University of Geneva on the loss of weight benefit of the extract implicated that green tea can also help thyroid patients. According to dietitian Lynn Moss, M.S., R.D.,tea extracts are a healthier choice for people with thyroid who may be too sensitive to stimulants. tea can promote loss of weight by increasing metabolism without over stimulating the adrenal glands.

A common beverage all throughout Asia, healthy tea has recently gained popularity in the West. Further researches were conducted to identify other health benefits of tea extracts aside from weight loseing. It was found that certain extract compounds can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and even ulcers.

PostHeaderIcon Reduce Your Risk Of Dying By 30 Percent-Drink Green Tea

I’ll start this article by revealing that I’m not objective about the topic. In fact, I have an conflict of intense interest: I love green tea.

I start just about every day with two pieces of rye toast and pot of green tea, and I usually make myself a second pot around noon. (I eat a late lunch, around 1:30 PM.)

I’ve noticed that it does exactly what studies on green tea and weight control say it does: reduces appetite.

I’ve read dozens of those studies in the last year as I wrote my new book, The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy: Drug-Free Remedies To Help You Safely Lose Weight, Shed Fat, Firm Up, And Feel Great (Broadway 2007). You can find out more about this book, and all my books on health and healing, at my website, www.drugfreehealing.com.

The studies I read also show that the main ingredients in green tea can increase calorie-burning by as much as 180 calories a day. Maybe green tea is doing that for me: I weigh 158 pounds-just a few pounds over my weight in high school.

And the gentle level of caffeine in the tea helps power me through the morning without the extreme ups and downs that I tend to experience when I drink (okay: guzzle) coffee.

The most active health-ingredient in green tea is a powerful antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.

Each year, there are literally thousands of studies conducted on EGCG, with scientists showing it protects and strengthens just about every cell and system in the body.

It shields brain cells from damage, stopping Alzheimer’s in mice genetically programmed to develop the disease.

In the laboratory, it reverses many different types of cancer, and is being tested in clinical trials at the Mayo Clinic for leukemia and at the University of Arizona for bladder cancer.

It can lower cholesterol, strengthen the immune system and protect the heart.

And now a new study-published in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association, in September 2006-shows that people who drink green tea aren’t just healthier. They live longer, too.

The study was conducted by a team of Japanese doctors. They looked closely at health statistics from a 10-year study of 40,530 men and women in Japan, aged 40 to 79. And they found that, as these people aged, those who drank the most green tea had the lowest death rates from any cause, and also the lowest death rates from heart disease. The specifics:

Men who 1 to 2 cups of green tea per day were 7% less likely to die during the years of the study than people who didn’t drink green tea. At a daily intake of 5 cups or more, they were 12% less likely to die.

Women got even more protection from green tea: an 18% lower death rate among those drinking 3 to 4 cups, and a 23% lower death rate among those drinking 5 cups or more.

When scientists looked at heart disease-which kills 1 out of every 2 people, here in America-they found the protection was even stronger. Women who drank 5 or more cups of tea a day had a 31% lower risk of dying from heart disease than women who didn’t drink green tea!

Tea also protected against stroke, in men and women.

Needless to say, I’m not planning to break my green tea habit. Based on this study, it might be a habit you may want to consider for yourself.

PostHeaderIcon Ephedra, or Ma Huang - Medicinal Uses, Interactions, Side Effects, Dosage

Ephedra, or Ma Huang

The best known ma huang comes from the stems of the Chinese ephedra bush, Ephedra sinica, although some may be derived from E. equisetum species; similar plants are used in India and in the Near East. The ephedra species found in the U.S. are used to produce Mormon tea, which has none of the major properties of Chinese ephedra.

Uses and Benefits:

The ephedra plant has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years, probably as an astringent, diuretic, and antipyretic, and for treating cough. It was found to contain ephedrine, and this agent was introduced in the U.S. as an oral drug for asthma in 1924. The ephedra plant also contains pseudoehedrine. These sympathomimetic agents are still useful drugs for treating respiratory disorders and nasal congestion. Ephedrine is also used intravenously as a vasopressor. Ma huang remains an important constituent of Chinese herbal medicines, and is incorporated in many multiherb formulations. In the U.S., it is a controversial dietary supplement for mood elevation and weight loss, and is advertised as an appetite suppressant, energizer, performance enhancer, and psychic stimulant. Other uses have included motion sickness, bradycardia, spastic or hypermotile bowel, diabetic neuropathic edema, and myasthenia gravis.

Pharmacology:

It has been well established that ephedrine and pseudoephe

PostHeaderIcon Origins, Flavors and Health Benefits

How many times do we just want to drink tea after a heavy meal, but are then bombarded with all the various tea flavours that we get lost. This article answers that need.

What you should always remember is that there are only four types of tea.

1) Black tea

2) Green tea

3) White tea

4) Oolong tea

All these are made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis, also known as the tea plant. Other herbal infusions such as chamomile tea, ginger tea or red tea made of rooibos leaves are disqualified as types of tea since the tea plant is not involved in their making. The difference between the four tea variations lies in the process of making them. In addition, each type of tea has another flavor and various health benefits.

1) Black Tea

The strong flavored burnt Sienna colored hot beverage is the most popular type of tea in the West. Either served with a squeeze of lemon or added milk and a cube of sugar, the cup of black tea is part of daily tea ceremonies that take place worldwide. Black tea is made of heavily oxidized Camellia sinensis leaves. When served plain, it contains no calories, carbohydrates, or fats. A cup of black tea contains more caffeine than any other types of tea but less than in any cup of coffee.

2) Green Tea

The lightly oxidized tea has been popular in China, Japan and Korea for centuries. Recently, rumors on its health benefits increased its popularity in the West as well. It has been proven that drinking green tea can lower cholesterol, prevent cancer, increase metabolic rates and be helpful in variety of other conditions and illnesses. The green tea is lightly oxidized, dried, but not fermented. It is usually served plain, without sugar or milk. Since some of the green tea variants taste a bit bitter, it should be brewed in lower temperature than the boiling point.

3) White Tea

White tea is rarer and more expensive than the other types of teas mentioned above. Originated in the Fujian province of china, the white tea is made of young Camellia sinensis leaves, which go through a long process of steaming or frying, inactivate fermenting and drying. Since the leaves are harvested while the buds are still covered by white hair, it is called white tea. White tea has the most delicate, sweet taste than the other types of tea. Moreover, it contains the smallest amount of caffeine and the largest amount of antioxidant that help prevent cancer.

4) Oolong Tea

The traditional Chinese tea is the common companion of Chinese foods such as dim sum and chop suey in American Chinese restaurants. The oolong tea, black dragon in Chinese, got its name after its long, dark distinguished leaves that look like wild black dragons when brewed. The unique taste of the oolong tea is achieved by a long process that includes sun drying of the Camellia sinensis leaves, light oxidization, cooling and drying processes. The result is a lighter flavor than the popular black tea and stronger than the delicate green tea.

PostHeaderIcon Chinese Oolong tea. . . works???

Alright I posted my concerns at another forum asking for a quick solution to a quick weight loss. But I will recap so if you have anything else that might work.

My situation is I realize this is not going to be a permenant fix, I am just looking for something that can make me look and feel better for this weekend event that I am going to. I have started to cut back on my eating "bad food" and working out. I just need that extra boost, for this weekend. I sound like a teenager but I wanna impress this guy! :-)

Well a poster said something about chinese oolong tea, that she lost 6 pounds in 5 days, so I am wondering does this work? Is that all that I need to take for the 5 days or what?

Also I am also wanting other thoughts to other methods that could possibly work.

Please nothing rude, because like I said I realize this is not a permenant fix just something to help me feel and look better for the weekend.

Thanx in advance for the help…

i think that makes u go to the bathroom a lot which could ruin ur weekend. i wouldn't experiment with something new right now. maybe take a ginseng supplement to make u feel energized. sounds like u r doing enough don't worry u'll have a good time the way u are : )
