For 4,000 years, Asians have regarded green tea as more than just a beverage. It was used as herbal medicine and treatment for everything from headaches to depressions and even to weight loss.

Researches have been conducted over the last few years to identify what compound present in green tea makes it a potent health drink. The scientists have found that the tea contains several antioxidants which are responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits, including a weight loss benefit.

A research study by American and Swiss scientists on the weight loss benefits of green tea was concluded and the results of which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Urology. During the course of their study, they have found that green tea contains certain compounds that contribute to losing weight.

Lead researcher, D. Abdul Dulloo said in a press release that there are only two ways to achieve weight loss - either reduce energy intake or increase energy expenditure. Green tea it seems, has compounds that can increase the body’s normal metabolism rate which is where it gets its weight loss benefit.

At the University of Geneva, where the study was conducted, Dr. Dulloo and his colleagues experimented on ten healthy young men. They theorized that the main contributor to green tea’s helping remove those extra pounds is its caffeine content. To test this hypothesis they placed the study’s participants on a typical “Western” diet which is about forty percent fat, forty-seven percent carbohydrates, and thirteen percent protein.

Thrice everyday, the researchers measured their subjects’ energy expenditure (the measurement used in determining the number of calories burned in 24 hours) and monitored their respiration quotient to find out how well they utilized their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

When they interpreted the data they collected, they found out that the men receiving regular dosages of green tea extract showed a significant increase in their 24-hour energy expenditure and a reduction in their respiration quotient (which means that more fat is burned, thereby achieving maximum weight loss). On the other hand, those men who were only given caffeine or placebo with every meal showed only minimal increases in their metabolism rates.

The scientists construed that the substance catechin polyphenol present in green tea adds to its weight loss benefit. These substances may alter how the body uses the hormone norepinephrine which is responsible for increasing the metabolism rate, thus leading to weight loss.

In their conclusion, the scientists inferred that green tea owes its weight loss benefit to the presence of antioxidants and the substance catechin polyphenol. These substances help decrease fat and calorie burning leading to the lose of those extra pounds.

I love green tea, when it comes to the subject I’m not objective. I start just about every day with a pot of Gunpowder green tea. Not everyday, some days I have a few cups of Genmaicha, Jasmine or Kukicha Twig Tea.

I have lived in New Orleans and Seattle, in both cities coffee is in the air. Shops have fans above their roasters that pull the air out into the streets. The coffee in both cities is great. I love the smell and taste of a good cup early in the morning. Sometimes even a bad cup is good. The only problem is my body does not like it and it lets me know. The days of taking a cap of Pepto-Bismol with my morning coffee are over. What is a Webmaster going to do? Caffeine it is one of my favorer molecules. I switched to green tea. I have tried many green teas. I liked most of them but green tea is not coffee.

Green tea better be good to compare with Cafe Du Monde Coffee with beignets at the French Market or a Starbucks double tall Latte at Pikes Place Market. Thanks to Gunpowder, I miss New Orleans and Seattle but I do not miss coffee.

Gunpowder green tea does it for me. There are other good teas but I enjoy Gunpowder the same way I enjoy a good Latte. I think everyone who enjoys coffee can find a green tea they enjoy just as much as coffee. Gunpowder may not be the tea for you, it may take some experimenting with teas but if you need to switch there is hope.

The gentle level of caffeine in the tea helps me enjoy the morning without the extreme ups and downs that I experience with coffee. I no longer have the shock of driving to work in the mornings so I do not need the jolt of a couple cups of coffee. I can enjoy two or three cups of tea without being too wired. More than three cups of a strong Gunpowder brew and I will be out mowing the yard before I know what is going on. That much caffeine and something just takes over.

The thing about Gunpowder is it needs to steep. I have read many articles about how to make tea and they generally say to let tea steep for just a few minutes. That just does not work for gunpowder. Gunpowder leaves are rolled up in tight balls. The leaves need time to unfold and steep. Put three cups of water in a pan, add a couple table spoons of gunpowder tea, bring the water just to almost boiling. Turn the heat down and let it sit. This is not microwave cooking and this is not tea bag tea. This is the real thing, let the leaves unfold and steep.

I am not trying to sell you on Gunpowder green tea. If you are a coffee drinker and want to switch I am trying to sell you on finding your own tea. It may take some experimenting with brewing your own teas. Get good strainer, a good pot and buy a bunch of teas. Buy as small amount as you can, of as many varieties as you can, so you can find a few you like.

Gunpowder can be a little strong, some of the other teas I like when gunpowder gets to be too much are Genmaicha, Jasmine and Kukicha Twig Tea. Jasmine is great with food. Genmaicha has popcorn and rice in it, it is not strong and is good brewed with a little Gunpowder. Kukicha twig is good to settle the stomach, it has a nice nutty flavor.

Tea has one half or a third of the caffeine as in coffee. That means you can drink twice to three times as much. The most caffeine is found in black tea. Caffeine is stronger the smaller the tea leaf. A higher caffeine content is in the tea leaves that are fermented longer. Fresh tea leaves contain about 4% caffeine.

If you do not want caffeine, decaffeinated green tea still has some caffeine. Not all of the caffeine can be taken out by the decaffeinating process only most of it. There is debate about how much of the benefits are lost by the decaffeinating process. Some say the health benefits are ruined.

Green tea is better for your teeth. Tea will stain your teeth but nowhere as bad as coffee. Tea contains fluoride, so your teeth will be healthier, if not as white. My dentist says that a rinse of water after drinking tea helps, also use baking soda-based toothpaste and get your teeth cleaned often. My dentist would say that.

However, based on the fact that research has shown that green tea’s anti-oxidants have the ability to scavenge abnormal and dying skin cells, it stands to reason that using green tea regularly over a period of many years would produce a cumulative effect that would be positive for the skin’s condition and appearance.

Many other botanicals that are used in skin care products do have the ability to perform some helpful functions on the skin. But, most of the products containing these ingredients have not been through strenuous laboratory testing, so their effects are undocumented. In addition, some botanical products may not require regulation by the Food and Drug Administration, so they may not meet federal health standards.

Because of the attention that green tea has received due to its likely ability to prevent cancer and other diseases, it has been more widely tested than many other botanicals. It has been widely tested for topical application to see if it has the potential to prevent or treat skin cancer, for example.

So, it’s perfectly ok to use botanical products to help with any special skin conditions you’re trying to treat. Most botanical products are safe, as long as you don’t have an allergy to them. And, they may be helpful at treating some skin conditions and at keeping skin moisturized.

But, if you’re looking for the best be in botanical products for the skin, it’s likely that green tea has the most potential. It has been more widely tested than other botanicals, and is likely to be of significant benefit, both in improving skin’s appearance and in preventing aging and skin cancer.

However, since, like other botanical products, green tea products may not have fallen under FDA guidelines, be sure to examine the list of ingredients carefully. You should ensure that green tea products actually contain active anti-oxidants, such as EGCG and theaflavins, before you purchase. I work at the airport so no liquids coming through security and I am not paying for green tea every day I work.

So if I have my green tea packet and drink it with cold water, will it have the same health benefits as if I were to drink it with hot water?

I’m sorry to say no. One of the benefits of green tea is that it is served warm, which facilitates digestion and dissolves fat in the stomach. One of the reasons Asians are thin is because they have green tea with most meals. It increases metabolism, aids digestion, and reduces appetite.

Some of the anti-oxidants will still get into the tea if you brew it cold, but of course you can dissolve more into warm water than cold. If it can’t be hot, at least let it warm up to room temperature before drinking it. Many restaruants will give you hot water for free though, especially if you have your own mug.

First let me begin by saying that tea does NOT contain more caffeine than coffee.

8 oz. - Tea, brewed, European brands (avg.) - 60mg caffeine
8 oz. - Tea, brewed, U.S. brands (avg.) - 40mg caffeine
vs.
8 oz. - Tea, green - 15mg caffeine

That being said, there are debates about what properties of tea may contribute to health benefits, if any.
If you are under the agreement that tea does tout benefits, then it is not only green tea, but black (basic everyday drinking tea) or red (oolong) tea as well. Green tea simply is less processed.
