I heard unconfirmed rumours that the Chinese govrement where back tracking with his after they got much criticism from outside and INside China. The official statement is said to be "delayed"

To be honest its waste of Chinese taxpayers money.

Anyone with common sense will wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system without "green dam".

As for protecting children, has no one heard of parental controls.

The controversy isn’t so much over protecting children from sex-related websites, but over the fact that the software gives censoring abilities to all kinds of websites to unknown system administrators.

"Filtering software that the government has mandated for all new computers in China is so technically flawed that outsiders can easily infiltrate a user’s machine to monitor Internet activity, steal personal data or plant destructive viruses, experts who have studied the program say.

“It contains serious vulnerabilities, which is especially worrisome given how widely the software will be adopted,” said J. Alex Halderman, a computer science professor at the University of Michigan who examined the program. “What we found was only the tip of the iceberg.”

"Foreign computer makers, which learned of the directive just three weeks ago, have been asking Chinese officials to reconsider the rules, which were formulated without their consultation. They say there are too many unanswered questions about the software, including whether it has the potential to damage operating systems."

The software was to be required effective July 1, 2009, but on June 30, the government announced an indefinite postponement.

"China has not lifted its requirement that an Internet filtering program be shipped with all computers sold in the country, even though the plan was postponed this week, state media said Thursday.

"It is just "a matter of time" before the mandate for PC makers to ship the program takes effect, the website of the official newspaper China Daily cited an unnamed official as saying Thursday."

If the software remains a required item, it could affect the business relationships with many international companies in China. Like it or not, China’s growing economy has strong roots in the international community, just as foreign economies are equally linked to China’s.

"Foreign PC makers did not appear to relax when China pushed back the Green Dam requirement. A Hewlett-Packard spokeswoman repeated an earlier comment that the company is seeking additional information. A Dell spokeswoman said the company supported China’s goal of protecting children from online pornography and would work to educate customers about filtering software that has been thoroughly tested."

If the goal is indeed, parental controls for undesired content, then existing software will meet that need.

Chinese netizens celebrated the delay of the software.
